Remembering The Tenements Day

There will be a special event taking place in Kings Inns, Henrietta Street, Dublin 1, on Saturday the 16th of April, 2016. ‘Remembering the Tenements Day’ will be hosted between 10 am and 3.30 pm. People who grew up (or had relatives who grew up) in a tenement house are being asked to bring items to add to the Dublin Tenements Museum Project.

No. 14 at Henrietta Street is being refurbished to become a Museum and is part of the Dublin Tenement Museum Project. It will officially open in 2017. Dublin City Council owns No. 14 and is responsible for the project. Visitors will get to experience what life was like and is for a tenement dweller. The public is also being asked to bring materials, photos, stories or related information about tenement life to the museum.

“With people’s permission we will record and photograph any objects you bring to Remembering the Tenements Day. Everything you bring in will go home with you on the day. We would also love to hear your stories about these items. The information shared with us will form a part of the museum in Henrietta Street and will also be kept in the National Folklore Collection for future generations to reference,” Charles Duggan, Heritage Officer with Dublin City Council said.

The Dublin tenements in Henrietta Street were occupied up to the 80’s and had over 850 men, women and children living there. The last residents to leave No.14, left in 1979. No.14 was the residence of 17 families in total for the period 1901 to 1911. In the early 1900’s over 25,000 people were recorded living in Dublin tenements.

The Iveagh Trust Museum at No. 3B in Dublin 8 in the Bull Alley Estate, Patrick Street, is another museum that used to be a tenement flat. The flat was occupied by Nellie Molloy and her family for 87 years.
