`A Galway Girl, In Dublin Town

Alan Finn reviews Sharon Shannon's last Vicar Street gig!

Sharon and Shane in full flight!

On Friday the 3rd January 2014, Sharon Shannon, Mundy, & Shane McGowan played live to a packed house in Vicar Street, in our wonderful city of Dublin.

I and my mate Stewart went along to this gig and we were not disappointed with either the music, or the singing. The show started about 8pm and it didn’t take long before everyone got in to the swing of it. Sharon Shannon and her band came on at 9pm and the place started to rock, Sharon looked stunning and played her Squeeze Box followed by the tin whistle. The music talent this one lady has is amazing and as always Sharon had her trade mark smile. Sharon who is originally from Clare, toyed with the audience and wanted to know was there anyone else from Clare, a couple of cheers could be heard from the crowd.

Shane McGowan came on just after Mundy, at about 10pm and opened his set up with the classic “Dirty Ole Town”.  Shane looked relaxed and happy, he too had his trademark, a cigarette which appeared to go out and required a stage hand came on to gave him a light! He then sang “Irish Rover” and at this stage the place was well and truely rocking. Then he sang “Sally McLennan” another from The Pogues classic repertoire before ending his set with the Christmas Classic “The Fairy Tale of New York”. All of the crowd were singing it with him, an unnamed lady then appeared on the stage and sang Kristy McColl’s part and did her, very proud.

Shane then stayed on stage when “Galway Girl” was played, with Mundy and Sharon Shannon. Sharon at the end of the song pushed up the tempo and “Galway Girl” suddenly came more alive.

When their next tour arrives in Vicar Street here in Dublin, I shall arrive to see them play again. Vicar Street gives the audience a chance to see their idols up close and I do like that in a venue.  It’s nice to be able to actually see the act instead of just hearing them, no big screens needed here. Brilliant!!

Shane McGowan, Mundy, Sharon Shannon and her band were ace they did us proud. The concert was fabulous the crowd were also great, it was well worth going to, 10 out of 10. Just Brilliant!
