Weekly Dublin 8 Planning Updates – Week 48, 2013

Kilmainham Courthouse, Dublin 8, Ireland

St. James’s Hospital have applied to implement large signs at both the James’s Street and Rialto entrances/exits. This is the first tangible visual sign locally of the impending new National Children’s Hospital, which is planned to be built on the St. James’s Hospital campus. Read our recent news story about that development here.

Additional information has been received regarding two major developments in Dublin 8 this week, the first of which is a 188 bedroom hotel with retail/office on ground level (maximum 8 floors), and an office/science and technology block (maximum 8 floors), surrounded by Mill Street, Blackpitts, Warrenmount Lane and Warrenmount Convent. The second of those large-scale developments involves some major work planned for The Digital Hub campus, including two new buildings containing 100 student apartments and some commercial property, plus a major renovation of the Grainstore Building.

There is also one other (minor) application of note, from Dublin Bus. Having been given permission to move a bus stop right here on James’s Street almost directly outside our local Information Office, they have reapplied to move it 23m from the original intended site, and the dimensions of the proposed shelter have been minimised a little too (the original decision is here, see 3109/13).

St. James’s Hospital has been granted permission to make changes to a two-story building, aswell as building a brand new two-story building beside it. This development is to take place at the southern end of the hospital grounds, alongside James’s Walk. Those buildings will contain examination and consulting rooms, and they will be linked via a pedestrian corridor with Building 5.

The Outhouse Buildings at Kilmainham Courthouse is also set for some building work, with an excavation given the green light, in order to allow for better access to the building. Here is some background, from MerrionStreet.ie, about the major work that’s about to begin there…”29th July 2013: Minister Hayes and Chief Justice Denham mark the handover of former Kilmainham Courthouse for landmark €5m 2016 project… The former Kilmainham Courthouse occupies a site immediately adjacent to Kilmainham Gaol and has been vacant since July 2008. The OPW propose to adapt the Kilmainham Courthouse building for visitor use; this is a unique opportunity to create additional space to deal with visitors and to provide ancillary curatorial, exhibition, research and welfare facilities. It is envisaged that the entire project will be complete in time for the 2016 centenary commemorations”.

As per usual, there is planning activity this week regarding domestic properties, but we don’t feature those here. We just feature commercial planning applications, decisions and appeals. However, you can view all domestic planning decisions in the weekly updates on the DCC website. The link is at the bottom of this page.
