Kilmainham Gaol Is Officially One of The World’s Top Attractions
The Dublin 8 landmark has been named by TripAdvisor as the 13th top attraction in the world.
It may seem strange to see Kilmainham Gaol Museum nestled in between the Parque del Retiro in Madrid and the Acropolis in Athens on the list but with over 27,000 reviews on the popular tourist website, it certainly deserves to be there.
The museum is in great company with the Colosseum, the Empire State Building, The Eiffel Tower and Angkor Wat also making the top 20. La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona took the coveted number one slot.
Kilmainham Gaol was opened in 1796 and operated for over 100 years, holding thousands of men, women and children as prisoners before its closure in 1924. Some of the most important figures in Irish history were imprisoned in Kilmainham Gaol including Charles Stewart Parnell, Anne Devlin, Robert Emmet, Countess Markievicz and the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising.
After its closure the Gaol was preserved as a national monument in the 1960s and opened to the public on the 10th of April 1966.
TripAdvisor also produced a list of the top attractions in Ireland for 2023 with Kilmainham Gaol obviously taking the crown at number 1. The Little Museum of Dublin finished runner up while 14 Henrietta Street and The Irish Rock n Roll Experience took 3rd and 4th place respectively. The Cliffs of Moher finished in 5th place closely followed by Nano Nagle Place in Cork. Glasnevin Cemetery, St Stephen’s Green, The Irish Whiskey Museum and Spike Island also made it into the top 10.
