Bridgefoot Street Garden in Finals of Energia’s “Get Ireland Growing” Competition

Bridgefoot Street Garden in Finals of Energia’s “Get Ireland Growing” Competition.

A few months back we at FRG interviewed the local men behind the Bridgefoot Street Garden. Prior to the mens efforts, the “garden” was essentially a green space that had been allowed to fall into ruin. Then, with nothing other than a community spirit, and a determination to inflict a beauty spot on the grey landscape of inner city Dublin, the lads delivered for the community. Not only did they create a garden, they created opportunities for people to learn new skills, make new friends, and that roses can grow from concrete.

Unfortunately, Dublin City Council had made noises that indicated they may take control of the garden and make it part of their soulless “urban renewal” agenda. However, as of yet the lads are still in control of the garden, and we at FRG hope it remains that way. In any event, the lads are too busy to be concerned with the boring bureaucratic befuddlement of Dublin City Council. They are in the top 3 finalists for Energia’s “Get Ireland Growing” Competition.

Energia, as Ireland’s largest producer of alternative energy feel that the success of their business relies upon disseminating to as many people as possible the benefits of green energy, and then demonstrating that green energy doesn’t just power electricity, it empowers communities.

And that is what their “Get Ireland Growing” campaign is all about. They are showing how initiatives like community gardens can have myriad positive effects. There were over 600 entrants from 85 different community groups in this year’s competition. So it is an immense achievement that the Bridgefoot Garden is on of the three finalists left.

Many people have already voted, and polls close tomorrow 23rd February, so if you want to vote, do it now. The following link directs you how to vote, and there is also a fantastic video of the lads’ garden.
