Phoenix Park Dublin - 350th Anniversary

INTERNATIONAL EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS 2012 – PILGRIM WALK 2nd JUNE TO 16th JUNE
Come and visit Seven of the Oldest Churches in the City Of Dublin:
St. Ann’s, Dawson Street
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Whitefriar Street
John’s Lane, Thomas Street
St. James’s, James’s street
St. Mary of the Angels, Church Street
St. MIchan’s, Halston Street
St. Mary’s Pro-Cathedral, Marlborough Street
The Pilgrim Walk involves a visit to each of these seven churches. A Pilgrim Passport will be issued to each participant and will be stamped at each of the seven churches. The Pilgrim should spend some time in quiet prayer during each church visit . The Walk concludes in the Pro-Cathedral, where the participant will be issued with a Pilgrimage Certificate of Completion.
There will be a Pilgrim Mass each day in the Pro-Cathedral – Monday to Friday 5.45p.m., Saturday 6.00p.m. and Sunday 6.30p.m.
During the time of the Pilgrim Walk, each of the seven churches will be open from 8.00a.m. to 8.00p.m.
St. James’s Church, James’s Street: Mass – Monday to Friday 10.00a.m., Saturday 6.30p.m. and Sunday 10.00a.m. and 11.30a.m.
There will be Benediction each evening at 7.30 p.m. from the 2nd June to the 17th June.

PHOENIX PARK 350TH ANNIVERSARY 1662 to 2012
James Butler, Duke of Ormond, who was the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, commenced the formation of the Phoenix deer park in 1662, on behalf of King Charles the 2nd. Conceived as a Royal Deer Park, it initially included the demesne of Kilmainham Priory, south of the river Liffey, but with the building of the Royal Hospital at Kilmainham in 1680, the Park was reduced to its present size.

Exhibitions at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre to celebrate the Anniversary;
MID MAY/MID JUNE
‘ the shadow of James Joyce’ Chapelizod and Environs. Joyce’s last great masterpiece, Finnegan’s Wake, makes many references to the Park and had its locale in Chapelizod. Contemporary Japanese Photographer, Motoko Fujita, captures the spirit of this historic village and the enclosure of the Phoenix Park, which adjoins it.
AUGUST
To coincide with Heritage Week, an exciting exhibition of images taken by the public, of the Phoenix Park, both past and present, will be exhibited.
SEPTEMBER
Motoring through time in the Phoenix Park. Motor racing first took place in the Phoenix Park in 1903, when the Irish Gordon Bennett Race Speed Trials were held on Chesterfield Avenue, for cars and motorbikes. This was followed in 1929 by the Irish International Grand Prix, the first of three such races. This interesting exhibition of video, photos and artefacts, coincides with a vintage car display and re-enactment of the sprints on Chesterfield Avenue of 1903.
OCTOBER
An exhibition of line drawings of buildings, views and artefacts of the Phoenix Park, by Sheelagh Duff, Artist, records the present day Phoenix Park.
NOVEMBER/DECEMBER
An exhibition on James Butler, Duke of Ormond, and his relationship with Ireland, concludes a year of celebrations.

LET’S WALK AND TALK
WALKING WITH BRAM STOKER AND HIS COUNT DRACULA
Wednesday 4th July at 5.00 p.m. – Meet at Barnardo’s Square (beside City Hall), Dame Street. 2012 is the centenary of the death of Bram Stoker. Expect to hear some chilling extracts from his most famous work, Dracula, as Pat Liddy leads you through the streets, courtyards, laneways and hidden steps of the former Medieval Quarter and afterwards at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, for Gothic Readings and Atmospheric Music.

THE LIBERTIES; DUBLIN’S EARLIEST TAX INCENTIVE AREA
Wednesday the 18th July at 2.00 p.m. – Meet at St. Patrick’s Park, Patrick’s Street, Dublin 8. This walk will take in areas of the Medieval Liberties, which in the 17th century evolved into an economic miracle, only to collapse dramatically in the 18th century, plunging the liberties into near destitution.
All Walk & Talk events are free. No booking necessary.
