Unexploded device found on Grand Canal Basin site

Builders on the Grand Canal basin site in Dublin were evacuated earlier today when a vintage artillery shell was discovered during excavations. Gardai and Army bomb disposal experts were on scene and removed the device. More on this as details emerge.

Yesterday between 10 am and 11 am the construction site at Grand Canal Basin in Dublin 8 was evacuated after an vintage artillery shell was uncovered. Gardai in uniform backed up by the E.R.U secured the area and the army bomb disposal team arrived about 11am. The device was removed shortly after and the area declared safe at Midday. Local residents expressed concern at the discovery and were surprised at the speedy reopening of the site due to recent safety issues at the site. The army press office issued a statement saying the device has been removed for further examination and urged members of the public if they encounter such munitions to maintain a safe distance and contact the Gardai.
