Statement Regarding the Bonfire on Thursday Night

We at the Fountain Resource Group would like to share our dismay at the actions of some of the young people from the area who attacked fire services as they attempted to put out the bonfire on Thursday evening.   We would like to say that it was a collection of youth from the surrounding area of Dublin 8 who used the flat complex as a focal point for the bonfire and, in no way, can the event be attributed directly to one area.

As part of our policy – and on Garda advice, of finding positive alternatives for young people in the area, we will continue to run our annual trip to the Cavan activity centre this Halloween.

Our youth projects will continue to act as an outreach for young people and continue to find positive alternatives to this kind of behaviour.

It is unfortunate that a small section of the media, in their reporting, grossly exaggerated incidents of stone and bottle throwing.  Whilst one stone thrown at the hard working emergency services is unacceptable, the Gardai have confirmed to us that these incidents were small in number.   We would like to commend the ongoing hard work of our emergency services who patiently work in trying circumstances such as the events last night.

We shall continue to cooperate with an Garda Siochana to deal with the many social deprivations of our area.
