Published this week by The Digital Hub, the December 2013 issue of the local newsletter contains some very interesting locally-focused stories indeed!

The Activage Conference is reviewed, and there’s news about the filming of ‘Penny Dreadful‘ in Dublin 8 over the past few months. The international tv series is produced by Sam Mendes (director of Revolutionary Road, Skyfall, and American Beauty), so that is a major coup for our area. But the most interesting story to me is the feature about the Mexican Ambassador coming to St. James’s Primary School on Basin Lane (beside our youth services) to hold a three-day-long festival to mark Mexico’s ‘Day of the Dead’. I kid you not!
There’s also an update on the 2013/2014 Future Creators programme, run by The Digital Hub and the National College of Art and Design (NCAD), which gives local secondary school students the chance to develop short films and smartphone apps such as puzzles, games and quizzes. This programme is aimed at helping local students to develop digital media skills and to encourage them to consider a career in digital media or technology. The local schools involved include Presentation Secondary School Warrenmount, St. Patrick’s Cathedral Grammar School, James’s Street CBS and Synge Street CBS.
The South West Inner City Local Employment Centre (SWIC LEC) is also featured. The service is based on the The Digital Hub campus, and it helps local unemployed jobseekers and employers alike. Local business, the Thomas Street Pharmacy, is highlighted, plus there is news about the impending roadworks as part of the building of the Thomas Street Quality Bus Corridor Enhancement Scheme (view our news article about that here).
There is exciting news about the new distillery that is planned for James’s Street (view our editorial about that here), and there are features about the D8GEC Gathering event, the NCAD Cumulus Conference, the re-opening of St. Catherines Church on Meath Street and a new football team for The Liberties, called Liberties F.C. And of course, there is news about the 2013 Dublin 8 Christmas Tree Lights being switched on at Cornmarket too.
Finally, The Digital Hub’s incredible record of bringing new digital/tech employers to the area is noted, with news of recent arrivals to Dublin 8. In recent months Plugmedia, Braahmam Net Solutions, iNavtas, Jool Erp, Health XL, Mycom Marketing, PLR Worldwide Sales, capSpire and Silicon Republic have all opened up facilities on The Digital Hub campus. That’s a nice bit of good news to end the year on!
