Local artist and film maker Shane Sutton as launched his debut exhibition at the MOXIE Gallery and Studio on Lad Lane off Baggot Street. It was the first time that all of Mr Sutton eclectic mix of work was brought together under one roof. The theme of the exhibition, Momentum – Light and Reflection, is clearly visible in some of the darker rain swept pieces but it is also something that can be felt throughout the experience. Shane explains that momentum refers to the slow, but gradually quickening, build up of pieces for his first exhibition as he travelled round the world. As he takes me through his work, he explains that this display as been the product of 10 years of exertion.
Shane, like so many of this vocation has been an artist from birth but only moved into the field professionally in 2000 after a life changing trip to Australia. Since then he has been amassing these pieces of vivid colour and darkened shadows. He has come to considerable recognition among his peers appearing as a mentor for Eamonn Coughlan on a RTÉ celebrity art reality show alongside Jim Fitzpatrick of Thin Lizzy and Che Guevara fame.
The exhibition itself takes the viewer through a myriad of city-scapes and urban settings. The locations intensely varied from Dublin, New York, Berlin to New Zealand and Thailand representing Shanes own life journey to this moment, to this exhibition. The artist draws in the viewer with at times gloomy backgrounds yet vibrantly coloured objects and all though momentum is the theme of exhibition, the viewer is struck by the stillness and serenity of what are busy New York streets and subways.
It is heartening to know that our local community, an area steeped in art and culture can produce such talent and it is recommended that Sutton’s star is watched as it is certainly on the rise.
