Eyes To The Skies: The Dublin FlightFest

Dublin FlightFest 2013

All eyes were to the sky on Sunday 15th September as up to 100,000 people flocked in to our wonderful city of Dublin to witness what had to be one of the best air shows not only in Ireland, but possibly Europe. You could not get an empty spot beside the Liffey as thousands upon thousands of people queued from early morning to get a decent viewing point. The weather the night before cast a shadow of doubt on whether the event would go ahead or not. Thankfully when I saw the 1st Aer Lingus in the sky over Dublin, I knew the show would go ahead, well, for the big planes anyway!

Aer Lingus done us very proud sending out two of their Jets to start the fly over, which was then followed, on cue, with a different display every 4 minutes, including a very good display from the Irish Air Crops based at Baldonnell outside Newcastle. But the biggest attraction, sent over from England, was the Boeing A380 BA’s only 1 in their fleet. All the displays flew over at only 800 feet and you could hear the A380s 4 engines roar all over Dublin city. It was a brilliant display. The event was organised by the Irish Aviation Authority and Dublin City Council as part of the Gathering Ireland celebrations.

The only down side was getting into the city. The Luas was jam packed, and whilst they did stop at all the stops, nobody could get on. I had to make my way over to James Street and take a bus, and while driving down Dame street we saw the 1st Aer Lingus Jet fly over and it was awesome. Then I knew my day had started!

here are some images I took myself…
