What’s your favorite film about this wonderful city we call home? Well that’s the question that was asked by the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival to the people of our fair city this week. The winning film is to be shown this Saturday (26th of July) at the Lighthouse Cinema in Smithfield at 6pm and tickets are free (but limited!).
The shortlist , which was decided by an online poll included “Once”, “The General”, “The Snapper”, “Adam and Paul”, “Intermission”,” Inside I’m dancing”, “My Left Foot”, “Micheal Collins”, “The Commitments”, “I went down”, “ Irish Destiny” and “Quackser Fortune”. When the votes were counted there was no surprise to find out that the winner was “The Commitments!” That’s right Alan Pakers’ masterpiece based on Roddy Doyle s first book in his Dublin Series.
In this film, Parker really captured life in Dublin in the 80’s, not only did he get that Dublin working class speak down to a tee (maybe someone should send a copy of this film to the writers of Fair City) but also achieved a wonderful gritty yet cinematic look for the big screen. It should come as no surprise that the film was such a success with a quick glance of his resume like “Fame”, “Bugsy Malone”, “Pink Floyd: The Wall”, “Evita”, “Angles Ashes” and Mississippi Burning.
Are we really surprised?
So if you want to see Dublin’s Greatest Film (again) then pop along to Smithfield this Saturday for a showing with an after party!
