The CO-OP market in Newmarket Square, just off Cork Street here in Dublin 8, is a market one must visit. It’s the season of goodwill and a must for shopping!
This market is run by volunteers, so therefore there are no big company behind it. It’s right in the middle of Dublin 8, and it sells everything, but what makes this market stand out to me, is that most of its food produce is organic.
I have heard a lot about this market so on the Friday before Christmas, the 20th of December 2013, I took a stroll down to it. It’s situated right on Newmarket Square, is accessible from Meath Street, Francis Street, Cork Street and the Old Coombe, and its open from Thursdays to Sundays. The main hall has stalls that sell bric-a-brac, vintage items, and everything you would expect to find in a regular market.
In one of the entrances, as you come in, is an organic and a health food shop. In this shop not only will you find organic food for people, but for your pets too! And not only is the food organic they even sell eco-friendly washing powder.
As expected in most organic health shops, their bestsellers are Soya Milk. Most of the produce is locally-produced, helping to keep alive jobs in the area. Their fresh bread is baked in Meath and it’s brought up on a daily basis.
Norman is the manger of this market and he informed us that when they are buying they will do their very best to maintain and support local jobs in the area, and buy local. Of course, not all of the produce can be sourced locally, but most of the vegetables are Irish as well as the diary products.
Norman also informed me that if people like Indian curries they can buy all their ingredients here, as well as organic rice.
Norman and the CO-OP would like to wish all of their incredibly loyal local customers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
