Dublin 8 Voted One Of The Best Neighbourhoods – As if you didn’t know already, Craig has more…

Timeout has listed Dublin 8 as the fifteenth coolest neighbourhood in the world, topping the list of Irish hangouts (in fact it was the ONLY Irish destination that managed to place on the list). Timeout was launched in London in 1968 as a magazine explicitly designed to bring attention to the new urban centres popping up around the world. It covers 328 cities in 58 countries around the globe, but their newest article is all about some of the coolest places to enjoy in cities around the world.

The website notes that the historical neighbourhood of Dublin 8 captures the charm and character of the Irish capital perfectly. They commend the fact that even though much of the city is becoming less distinct with hotels and skyscrapers cropping up everywhere, the liberties retains much of its historical character.

To be fair, it’s not too surprising it places so highly. There are swathes of instagram and social media pages where people take photos in Dublin 8, often using hashtags that raise the love. It could be something as simple as a small flower box seen on the way to work, or a new mural or a photo of one of the many old churches to be found in the area. This part of the city is always bustling with life, and obviously, it’s being taken notice of.

Timeout recommends a perfect day for each of the neighbourhoods; and some of the suggestions will be well known to locals. Start in a pet friendly cafe, then perhaps take a walk to the war memorial gardens or the Phoenix Park. Then in the afternoon, it suggests taking a tour of the distilleries. Maybe round off the day with a pint in one of the many snug pubs in the area.

The list was focused on areas people might not be familiar with, hidden gems and “under-rated” places. Over 27000 city-dwelling voters took part in naming the most culturally exciting neighbourhoods, with Norebro, Copenhagen topping the list, and others such as Xi District Buddapest and Ngor, Dakor adding to the far-reaching variety of attractions considered. It certainly looks like Dublin 8 is in good company!
