Bull or Bear, a company that is based in The Digital Hub, has won the 2013 DIGITAL START-UP Eircom Golden Spider Award. Furthermore, one of it’s two current apps – it’s Bull or Bear League – was nominated within two other categories, USER EXPERIENCE and SPORTS.
Based in the Digital Depot on Thomas Street in Dublin 8, Bull or Bear is a relatively new company that designs apps for mobile phones which allow groups of friends to bet with each other. The apps operate in a similar fashion to a social network, and the idea for the company was only conceived in September 2012, with the first piece of code being written as recently as November of last year.
They have two apps – AnyBet/Bull or Bear Leagues – with the latter, the leagues app, only launched in September of this year. Incredibly it was nominated for the Eircom Spiders, in two categories, held only a couple of months later! The awards were handed out on Thursday the 28th of November at the Convention Centre, Spencer Dock.
Digital Hub Residents Nominated for the 2013 Eircom Spider Awards
- DIGITAL START-UP: Bull or Bear
- DIGITAL START-UP: Way2Pay website by Schoolspace
- USER EXPERIENCE: Bull or Bear Leagues
- USER EXPERIENCE: Chill Insurance, a client of Big Bang Design
- SPORTS: Bull or Bear Leagues
- FINANCIAL SERVICES: Chill Insurance, a client of Big Bang Design
Another Digital Hub resident Big Bang Design, saw one of their clients, Chill Insurance, being nominated in the USER EXPERIENCE and FINANCIAL SERVICES categories. Big Bang Design provides companies with ways to generate leads, and turn those leads into customers/clients. They also provide analytics/reporting to help measure a campaigns success, to tweak it, and to plan future campaigns.
A third company based in the Dublin 8 campus was also nominated. The Way2Pay app, by Schoolspace, was nominated in the DIGITAL START-UP category, pitting it up against neighboring business, Bull or Bear.
Way2Pay is an app that allows schools to collect income. If there are costs associated with activities at a school then Way2Pay gives parents an easy way to pay, plus it gives the school a low-cost and easy way to collect. There will also be transparency during the payment process, which is a decent improvement from parents having to put cash into envelopes, so that their kids can hand them to their teachers. From the outside atleast, this looks like a really useful app!
As you can see just from these three companies mentioned above, there is a lot of digital innovation happening right here in Dublin 8, with The Digital Hub really working hard to bring innovative and forward thinking companies to our corner of Dublin’s fair city. Set up by the Irish government in 2003 (they are a public-owned Government agency), currently there are 71 companies listed in their directory, but in total, there have been 160 different digital/technology companies who have been based at their D8 campus over the past decade.
