Demolition of flats at St Teresa’s Gardens in Dublin 8 begins
St Teresa’s Gardens, beside the Coombe Maternity Hospital is going to be demolished due to a €12.5 million Dublin City Council social housing regeneration scheme. It was supposed to be knocked down and then rebuilt five years ago but due to the collapse of the property market the plans didn’t happen. The flats had become increasingly run down since the failure of the PPP scheme with permanent sewerage and dampness. The council engineers have been unable to resolve this.
Less housing
The council has decided to demolish all of the 300 flats in the complex, most of which are unoccupied. They are going to rebuild less housing on the site, but intend to increase this in future years. The demolition of the flats began a few days ago and one block has already been knocked down, with the demolition of two more in progress. In November plans to construct 50 new homes on the 2.3-hectare site will go ahead. 16 of these will be apartments that will range from three-to-five storey’s and the remaining 34 will be terraced houses of about two-to-three storey’s high. The new housing is due to be ready in early to mid-2017. A new park will also be created.
