Our youth project had a great night out, at the premiere of their very own drama film!
Reel Youth 2013 kicked off with an impressive premiere at Liberty Hall last night, which was attended by the Love/Hate writer, Stuart Carolan, plus a host of the actors from the hit RTE show.
12 youth projects from around Ireland produced films for this years Reel Youth DVD. Celebrating 10 years this year, copies of the DVD will be available later in the year.
A local premiere will be held in the James’ Street area over the coming weeks, as will local premieres for all of the dozen youth projects who took place. More news about our local premiere very soon.
This years theme for the youth films was mental health, and the Headstrong founding director, Dr Tony Bates, was also present at the premiere. Headstrong is The National Centre for Youth Mental Health – a non-profit organisation supporting young people’s mental health in Ireland.
And our kids showed great promise, with at least one of the lads being promised a screen test for an RTE show, with hopefully other opportunities opening up for others from this film.
Over the years, the comedian Des Bishop has given Reel Youth’s filmmakers workshops on acting; Roddy Doyle has helped out through his Fighting Words Centre on story development. Glen Hansard and Amy Huberman have attended previous years’ screenings.
There’s been a big success rate with the youths involved, who age from 13 upwards, says Niamh Geoghegan, spokesperson for Reel Youth 2013, with many going onto further education, volunteering and work projects with DCTV, RTÉ and film studies.
