The Healing Powers of Cats
Do our furry feline friends have healing powers? According to a recent scientific study, the vibration of a cat purring can promote the healing of broken bones. The findings also revealed that cat owners live longer than those who do not own a cat, and owners are also less likely to die of heart disease. The vibration of a cat purring reduces stress levels and lowers blood pressure in humans. It can, also, aid in healing the symptoms of emphysema, bronchitis, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), help to heal muscles and to reduce swelling. The most therapeutic results for healing human complaints are when a cat purrs within a range of 20-140 hertz.
A report from the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Neurology concluded that: “Acquisition of cats as domestic pets may represent a novel treatment, if you put a cat and a bunch of broken bones in the same room,” goes an old saying among vets, “the bones will heal.”
David Greene, author of his book Your Incredible Cat: Understanding the Secret Powers of Your Pet, tells the story of a stray cat that regularly climbed inside a sick little girl’s bedroom window. The little girl had been in a coma for months and her parents were dubious about her recovery. The cat would snuggle beside the little girl in the bed and would lick her hand. The child’s mother noticed her fingers moving gently one evening when the cat was licking them. A week later she spoke for the first time. Was this a coincidence or did this stray cat cure the child? The parents felt that the cat came to help their little girl and are eternally grateful to it for doing so.
A report from the Frontiers of Psychology found that people who owned cats became more trusting, less aggressive and more empathetic in nature. They said: “We propose that the activation of the oxytocin system plays a key role in the majority of these reported psychological and psycho physiological effects of human-animal interaction”. Cat owners have reported that their cat often knows when they are feeling sick or upset. The animal will seek to comfort them by coming close to them and purring. Cats are also able to sense negative energy and have the ability to correct it.
Ingrid King, author of ‘Buckley’s story – Lessons from a Feline Master Teacher’ and ‘Purrs of Wisdom’ explains about her cat’s ability to heal her clients during a Reiki treatment.
She says the cat enjoys been in the same room as the client during a treatment, and often likes to become involved with the Reiki session. She jumps onto the massage bed and onto the person’s lap (provided the person likes cats) and she purrs contently. The client often remarks afterwards how they felt an increased feeling of wellbeing. Ingrid feels that the cat intuitively knows where the person’s energy is imbalanced, and can correct blocked areas, in a way that she was unable to, during the session.
Dr. Dosa author of “ Making rounds with Oscar: the extraordinary gift of an ordinary cat” tells a story of a cat called Oscar, living at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation centre in Providence, Rhode island. Oscar has the amazing ability to intuitively know when a patient is about to die. He goes into a patient’s room and lies beside them, hours later the person passes away. The nurses observed the cat’s behavior and began placing Oscar in a patient’s room when they thought the person was going to die that day. The cat however would not stay in that person’s room but would instead run into another patient’s room. This patient would die later that day. Oscar had more of an insight than the nurses. Relatives of the patients said they felt it was a huge source of comfort to them to know that the cat had given their loved one comfort before they had passed on. Dr Dosa suggests that cats can smell the ketones coming from dying cells.
In my opinion these mystical creatures have been proven to heal and soothe a wide range of physical, emotional and mental imbalances. I definitely resonate with cats on a spiritual level. I do think that they can sometimes be misconceived by people. They are independent animals, but that does not mean that they don’t need or are unable to feel love. Some people may argue with this and say that cats are selfish and disloyal. However I think cats, like any other animal, have their own individual personalities and some are more sociable than others. I have heard people say that they dislike cats so much that they are nervous to be in the same room as one. I think it is such a shame that person is missing out on the genuine holistic healing and love emanating from this animal’s energy field. So if you would like to promote your health and wellbeing and dissipate any negative energy that is in your home, go to your local shelter and adopt a cat today.
