Player Willis Factory plans up in smoke?

Is the development of the Player Wills factory on the South Circular Road another white elephant like the Iveagh Markets?

Timeline of the Player Wills Development in Dublin

2018: The American real estate company Hines acquired the former Player Wills cigarette factory site in Dublin 8. This marked the beginning of a significant redevelopment project aimed at transforming the area.

2020: An Bord Pleanála granted planning permission for the construction of 732 residential units on the Player Wills site. This was part of a larger redevelopment plan that also included the nearby Bailey Gibson site.

2021: The second phase of the Player Wills project received approval from An Bord Pleanála. This phase included 732 new residential units and two large public parks. Additionally, the former factory was set to be transformed into a mixed-use space with amenities such as cafes, a gym, and community spaces.

2023: A legal dispute concerning the development was resolved, allowing construction to proceed. The dispute had involved objections from local residents, but an agreement was reached that included contributions to a local community fund and other concessions.

2024: No work has been carried out on the site and the main building condition has appeared to have massively degraded with multiple broken windows.

Future Plans ? : The development will feature four apartment blocks, one reaching 19 storeys, and a mix of apartments and shared accommodation units. The original factory building will be extended from four to eight storeys.
