Professor Alex Milton Appointed Head of School of Design at NCAD
Finally the long wait is over; a new Head of School of Design at the National College of Art and Design has been appointed. Professor Alex Milton will take up his position as the Head of Design on the 16th of January 2017 – that is next week for those of you are too tired after the festive season to do the math.
“Professor Milton is no stranger to NCAD. He previously held the position of Head of School of Design between May 2012 and June 2014 before leaving to take on the demanding and important role as Programme Director of Irish design 2015,” Bernard Hanratty, Acting Director at NCAD said.
“We are delighted to welcome Alex back to NCAD. His knowledge of the institution means that he will hit the ground running, while his time outside the College has very much augmented his industry knowledge, profile and influence.”
Prof Milton was trained as a car designer at Coventry University before he made his way to NCAD. He was also a former Head of Design and Applied Arts at Edinburgh College of Art and taught at Herriot-Watt University, Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing and the Edinburgh Napier University.
Not only is he an established designer, educator and curator, but he is also the author of a number of publications. Some of his published works include ‘Irish Design 2015 – Making Design Matter’, ‘Product design’ and ‘Research Methods for Product Design’.
Professor Milton who was one of 23 candidates for the position is delighted about his new role and said: “I am delighted to return to NCAD, at what is a pivotal time for design in Ireland. I look forward to working with students, staff and the wider design community to position NCAD as a leading design institution in this changing landscape.”
