ISTD Awards NCAD Students Membership
The National College of Art and Design (NCAD) is situated in the heart of the Liberties and is one of the most sought after art and design institutions in Ireland. NCAD has over 1,100 full-time students and 450 part-time students attending their classes each year. Twelve final year Visual Communication Students will be awarded certificates in recognition of their achievements at the International Society of Typographic Designers Awards in London in July 2016. ISTD a professional body who recognizes and awards top art and design students worldwide with membership.
Ally Moorhead received ISTD membership with Merit (one of only three awarded in Ireland). A further 11 students were awarded membership including: Shane Bonfield, Diane Dear, Melodie Fox, Katie Kidd, Eulich McGeown, Niamh McNally, Jennifer O’Brien, Christine O’Flynn, Michael Simpson, Jamie Smyth, and Shauna Woods.
“Gaining membership to this recognised Society gives graduating students an edge when applying for work within the creative industries. It is a difficult task and a great honour to have the ISTD accreditation after one’s name. We are delighted for all the students – especially the Merit award is very rare,” John Paul Dowling, tutor at the Department of Visual Communications, NCAD, said.
The “Society” has an international membership, with assessments held across five regions annually; they include: Ireland, UK, the Middle-East, South Africa and Australasia.The typographers, graphic designers and educators that are selected for membership are picked after the work they submit are assessed by a team of professional designers and educators. It is considered one of the most honest assessments in the world, with no personal likes or dislikes affecting the outcome of the selection process.
