Summer Events In Ireland – In an optimistic turn more concerts are planned for August.
With the successful launch of trial events recently, particularly the one at Kilmainham hospital which featured Gavin James, Sharon Shannon and Wild Youth, it seems Ireland is all set to have a Summer of fantastic live music and events. Here are some to watch out for in the coming weeks and months.
Meadows Festival
Meadows is a new festival taking place in IMMA (Irish Museum of Modern Art) at the Royal Hospital in Kilmainham from August 20th – 22cnd. The event will showcase a wide variety of musical styles, with six musical shows covering folk, indie, and soul as well as orchestral performances. There will also be spoken word and podcasts taking place under the banner of All Curious Minds.
All of the events will be socially distanced with numbered pods. For those who are looking to enjoy music outdoors, but perhaps in a more laid back setting, this event may be for you.
Tickets are on sale now at €19 per person.
Blade Runner Live
A few years ago I was lucky enough to have the pleasure of seeing the RTE Concert Orchestra accompanying Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. Now, the Avex Ensemble are giving Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner the same treatment. Vangelis’s synthesiser lead score will be performed in sync with the film on a huge high definition screen. While I’m not entirely sure if it will be the original cut with Harrison Ford’s notorious voice-over, or more likely the much improved ultimate cut, it promises to be an amazing experience either way. As far as film scores go, Vangelis’s music is unparalleled, and seeing it performed live with the film seems like the perfect way to shake the cob-webs off for anyone looking to enjoy classic sci-fi with a performance of one of the best soundtracks of all time rolled into one unforgettable night. The screening will be held at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre on September 14th. Tickets available now.
Alanis Morisette
Canadian born, grammy award winning singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette will be performing live at the 3Arena. Her latest album, “such pretty forks in the road”, is her first in eight years. The songs are vulnerable, mainly ballads, and often string driven affairs from the passionate and outspoken pop-star, but no doubt there will be many memorable hits from the nineties like “hand in my pocket”, “you learn” and other fan favourite numbers from a considerable career to mix things up.
Jack Lukeman
Ever since he burst onto the music scene, channeling Jaques Brell with the black romantics in 1995, Jack Lukeman has honed his craft whether it be covers or his own song-writing. He’s become a mainstay of Irish music. Lukeman’s voice is a marvel to listen to live, he has an incredible range and a rich deep baritone which has made him renowned both at home and abroad. No doubt he will be delighted to see fans in attendance at the Whale Theatre, Greystones on September 18th.
