Board and Lodgings Under Review

“Board and lodgings” rates are under review at the request of Minister for Employment and Small Business, Pat Breen T.D., who today asked the Low Pay Commission to take in account certain reckonable components.

Sixteen years ago the Interdepartmental Group on Implementation of A National Minimum Wage recommended that an employee who is being given full board and lodgings, or lodgings only or full board only, would also be entitled to an allowance as part of the national minimum wage.

The Minister said that in a recent Dail debate on the Au Pair Placement Bill 2016 he had indicated that the board and lodgings rates were set in 2000 and that now is a good time to review its appropriateness.

“I look forward to receiving those reports by the end of October next and following that the Commission will then proceed to report on the board and lodgings rates,” the Minister said today.

At present under the National Minimum Wage Act 2000 the Act provides for the following amounts:

€54.13 for board and lodgings per week, or €7.73 per day;

€32.14 for board only per week, or €4.60 per day;

€21.85 for lodgings only per week, or €3.14 per day.
