Renovation of St Patrick’s Cathedral and Surrounds

Renovation of St Patrick’s Cathedral and surrounds.

Built to honour the patron saint of Ireland the present building dates back to the mid-thirteenth century.

It is said to be on the site of St Patrick’s well where tradition has it he baptised converts to Christianity on his visit to Dublin.

One of Ireland’s most popular visitor attractions with an average of 600,000 visitors on a typical pre-covid year.

The 9.6 million project aided by the Department of Housing to the tune of 1.2 million is the most significant renovation of the cathedral in 160 years.

Part-funded by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, The Roof Conservation Project included the replacement of roof slates, gutters and walkways, as well as the repair of masonry, glazing and carpentry.

Over 14,000 individually cut roof tiles were used in the project.

Dublin Corporation Parks Department has also improved the environs of Patrick’s park with the introduction of formal hedges, topiary, and a wildflower garden.
