NCAD Has Appointed a New Acting Director

The National College of Art and Design welcomed Mr Bernard Hanratty as Acting Director of the College. He will be taking over from Professor Declan McGonagle. Prof McGonagle retired at the end of December 2015.

Dr Gary Granville served as Interim Director for a month, but will now step down so that Mr Hanratty can take up his new role as Acting Director. He will be responsible for running the College, taking care of the College’s finances, and organising and governing the College until a Permanent Director is appointed.

For the moment it would appear that Mr Hanratty will stay on until 2017, before the new Permanent Director will take over from him.

“I am very pleased to have the opportunity to work with the historic and culturally significant institution that is NCAD. The focus on finance and governance matters will be balanced with a commitment to the interests of staff and students,” Mr Hanratty said about his new appointment.

Mr Hanratty is a retired Managing Director for the US bank Citygroup where he worked for 30 years before retiring in September 2014. He was responsible for managing sales, products, relationships and operations while at Citygroup. He is also an Independent Non-Executive Director and the founder of the governance software house Tivus.

What set Mr Hanratty apart from the  other candidates was his experience in financial matters and governance; he impressed the board with his vision for the College’s future.

Mr Hanratty will commence his duties on the 1st of March and is expected to stay for nine months. Mr Hanratty tweeted on Tuesday: “First time through the arch. Excited about new role.”
