Lord Mayor Call On Public To Keep Giving

On Monday the 27th of June the new Lord Mayor of Dublin was elected. Labour Cllr Brendan Carr is the 347th Lord Mayor of Dublin to be elected at the Annual Meeting of the City Council which was held at City Hall. Cllr Rebecca Moynihan was selected as Deputy Lord Mayor of Dublin.

Today Lord Mayor Brendan Carr called on Irish citizens not to give up on donating to charities. In recent days Prime Time revealed that the suicide charity Console’s chief executive Paul Kelly, embezzled money which he used for personal gain.

Paul Kelly who used to dress up as a doctor, pilot and priest when looking for funds has now resigned from his position. This revelation has many people who give to charities wondering if it is safe to continue doing so and many have stopped supporting their favorite charities.

Lord Mayor Carr said it would be a real shame if we tar all Irish charities with the one brush, because of a self-serving minority at the top that have detached themselves from the tireless work being done by their employees and numerous volunteers and also said: “I am extremely concerned at the very serious situation that many charities currently find themselves in, given the recent reputational scandals that have adversely impacted the entire sector, resulting in a significant drop in donations and support for the many great causes for which they advocate.

As first citizen of Dublin, I am calling on the goodwill of Irish people to continue to support the charity and voluntary sector, who for so long have done so much invaluable work acting as a linchpin for a multitude of deserving classes.”

Sinn Fein Cllr Críona Ní Dhálaigh who was elected as Lord Mayor on the 29th of June 2015 said on Monday: “On my final day as Ardmhéara Bhaile Átha Cliath, I would like to thank everyone who has supported me throughout my year as first citizen. It is a year I will remember for the rest of my life. I am very proud to have been first citizen and very proud of this great city.

Ba mhaith liom buíochas a ghabháil leo siúd ar fad a chuidigh liom i rith mo bhliain mar Phríomh Saoránach. Ní dhéanfaidh mé dearmad go brách ar an mbliain seo. Ba chúis mhórtais dom a bheith i mo Phríomh Saoránach ar an gcathair iontach seo.”
