Diageo Goes Into Partnership With WaterAid

Diageo has been supporting WaterAid for the last fifteen years with the Water of Life programme in Africa, aiding some of the poorest communities in the world. Last week Diageo announced that they will be going into partnership with WaterAid for the next five years.

As a team they intend to supply local areas near areas where Diageo operates or sources their agricultural raw materials from with facilities like new toilets, water connections, pumps and wells in households and schools .

“We’re delighted to announce a five-year strategic partnership with Diageo. This new partnership builds on support Diageo has given WaterAid over the last 15 years to help reach some of the world’s most marginalised communities with access to safe water and sanitation.

WaterAid believes safe water and sanitation are basic human rights, and that the private sector has an important role to play in achieving universal access to water and sanitation.

The global water and sanitation crisis requires a joined-up and collaborative approach between NGOs, businesses and governments to ensure everyone everywhere has safe water and sanitation by the year 2030,” the Chief Executive of WaterAid, Barbara Frost said.

The WaterAid organisation has been working in 37 countries since 1981, has reached 23 million people with safe water and 21 million people with sanitation. In a world where 315,000 children die each year from diarrhoeal diseases caused by dirty water and poor sanitation, an organisation like WaterAid needs all the support they can possibly get.

The statistics are staggering. It has been estimated that one in ten people are without safe water and one in three people live without proper sanitation.

David Cutter at Diageo said about their new partnership with WaterAid: “WaterAid is a fantastic NGO and we are hugely proud to partner with them to intensify our efforts. Whether in India, Africa or South East Asia, our partnership will bring together Diageo’s broad geographical footprint with WaterAid’s great expertise and experience.”
