One of my favourite television programs over the last decade or so has been RTE’s ‘Reeling in the years’. I’m not sure about the rest of you but it gives me a great sense of contentment as I take a walk down memory lane and smile to myself as I am reminded of the great moments that have passed. So no one was more pleased that me when some friends of mine and I came across, by complete accident, The Little Museum of Dublin. ‘What is the little museum of Dublin’, I hear you say? Well to sum it up in its simplest form it’s a collection of pop culture we all have had or at very least have had memories of.
It’s located at 15 St Stephens Green, near the corner of Dawson Street and is open every day from 9.30am – 5pm, with late opening on Thursday until 8pm. And yes, they can and do provide guided tours that start on the hour, every hour – and to be honest this is the best way to see the museum.
The museum itself is situated on the first floor of a Georgian building, which is probably the best setting for this hugely underrated Aladdin’s cave of magical moments from our distant and not so distant past.
They have three exhibition spaces over three floors, with over 5,000 items on display and all visitors to the museum enjoy a 10% discount in Hatch & Sons, the acclaimed Irish restaurant in the basement of the museum. Just show your receipt from the museum to avail of your discount.
So regarding the museum entrance fee, the the General admission is a very reasonable €7.00 and there are discounts for senior citizens and students upon presentation of a student card. Try as I could I just couldn’t pass for a student or senior citizen, which shows the staff are on their toes. Job seekers and children under three years old have free admission and there is assistance available for wheelchair users, but please contact them in advance of your visit.
