Journalist of the Year – Ryan Bailey

Ryan Bailey won the Soccer Writer’s Association of Ireland’s – Brendan McKenna Memorial Award last week. An award for sports journalism. Ryan is a student at Griffith College here in Dublin 8 and is currently doing his Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree in Journalism and Visual Media. This is his second major award this year. In April he won the National Student Media Award for Sport Journalist of the Year. The award is a memorial award in honour of former journalist for the Evening Press and FAI media officer, Brendan McKenna, created to award third-level students who want to pursue a career in football journalism.

Ryan loves writing about sports and specialises in football and cricket. But he is equally as talented and knowledgeable when it comes to covering other major sporting events including golf, rugby, tennis and athletics. On his LinkedIn profile Ryan says: “I am writing for several national and international online and print publications including; ESPNcricinfo, RTE.ie, thejournal.ie, Metro Herald and TeamTalk Media.”

The article that won him the McKenna Award was an interview with Chester FC’s Graig Mahon called: Magic of the FA Cup rubbing off on Dubliner Graig Mahon as he hopes to catch the eye. Ryan who has been excelling at what he loves doing best, reporting on sport and football, also loves match reporting, interviewing for print and broadcast, feature writing and live blogging.
