St Patrick’s colour was blue, not green. In fact the ancient Irish flags were represented by blue. The introduction of green came during the 1798 Irish rebellion.

The first Patrick’s Day parade took place in New York in 1762.

St. Patrick’s real name was Maewyn Succat. He changed his name to Patricius when he became a  priest.

He used the native shamrock as a symbol of the holy trinity when preaching and brought the Latin alphabet to Ireland.

St Patrick died on March 17 in 461AD.

St Patrick’s Day is also a national holiday on the island of Montserrat in the Caribbean.

On St Patrick’s Day 13 million pints of Guinness are drunk worldwide.

St. Patrick tended sheep in Ireland before he escaped.
